With much anticipation, we’ve been working on developing a version of Todoist for Apple Watch since early this year. Our team of iOS developers and designers has taken great care to properly adapt the Todoist experience to Apple’s new device, especially considering the unique space constraints that come with the wearable territory. One thing, though, has been missing throughout this development process: we have not tested Todoist on an actual Apple Watch.
This is the case for many Apple Watch developers. The platform was not made widely available for testing, and not all software developers are located in or even near California. Our team of iOS developers and designers, for example, spans across Portugal, Peru, Germany, Spain, and Taiwan. A quick drive up to Cupertino isn’t very feasible. Nevertheless, we have always prided ourselves on being an almost entirely remote company, with over 30 team members in 18 countries. International time-zones and borders have never stopped us before, and they are not stopping us now.
We are very eager to get our hands on the device in order to begin using and testing our Todoist build. But one thing is certain: we will not ship an app without properly testing it. This is why you will not find Todoist in the Apple Watch App Store today.
For our team, an excellent user experience is paramount to everything else, and this is not something that we’re willing to sacrifice. When we build our apps, we take great care to make sure each detail is both meaningfully and dutifully designed. Todoist for Apple Watch is not an exception. Only when we have been able to thoroughly test the app on the device will we release it to our community. This, of course, is something that we’re very excited for!
If you’d like to get a glimpse into what we’ve been building, we’re happy to share this video with you. The images are taken from one of our initial builds from back in February—one that you may have seen featured in TechCrunch, The Verge, The Guardian, or a handful of other publications who picked up the story. (Please note that the finished app we will release won’t look or behave like this.)
We truly look forward to sharing Todoist for Apple Watch with you once it’s ready. Thank you for your support and please feel free to share your feedback below in the comments section or contact me via Twitter at @amix3k.
