Description

Doist’s mission is to build the future of work.

While the “future of work” concept has floated around as a trendy catchall, appearing in bland blog titles and uninspiring corporate webinars, do not be mistaken: Doist’s future of work is not their future of work.

Their future of work is more pings, tracking, and meetings. It’s trying to force the square peg of antiquated office work into the round and limitless circle of what work can be.

They approach the future of work from the past. We approach the future of work without assumptions. We're not incrementally improving upon the past. We're questioning everything and radically rethinking what's possible.

As Doist builds the future of work, many more people across the globe will thrive, both professionally and personally.

By relying on our best-in-class tools like Todoist and Twist, and inspiration from our very own workflows we will empower people to turn their big ideas into reality by focusing on meaningful, high-value work. And we will enable people from anywhere to participate in the global economy, thanks to more effective collaboration across time zones and continents.

Our Core Values

They are few, but they are mighty. From creating processes to decision-making and recruiting, we build our four core values into nearly every single thing we do.

  • Ambition. You aspire to put a dent in the universe. You set high standards for yourself and those around you. You solve issues that have a high impact on our customers and our company.

  • Mastery. You care deeply about the quality of your work. You’re continuously learning and pushing yourself to the limits of your ability. As a champion of your craft, you are also a champion of your well-being – you work intensely, then disconnect completely.

  • Independence. Others can trust that you’ll deliver on time. You keep your word and trust your teammates to do the same. You are proactive, take ownership, and remain accountable with little or no direction.

  • Communication. Your communication is clear, concise, and engaging. You keep others in the loop and never go radio silent. You speak respectfully and foster warm relationships through your interactions. You’re culturally and socially aware and can appropriately navigate social situations.

Within engineering, we complement these in ways relevant to how we build technology.

  • Continuous improvement. You relentlessly pursue continuous improvement, leaving things better than how you found them, and shipping early and often.

  • Pragmatism. You accept that impact requires trade-offs and do them intentionally. You work transparently and participate in all stages of work.

  • Cooperation. You consolidate high-level practices across engineering, actively supporting and challenging your colleagues, and giving back to the projects communities we build on top of.

About the position

We are looking for Head of Apple who is passionate about high-quality software that powers long-lasting products. Heads at Doist hold the responsibility of leading and supporting their team, planning and strategizing for their platform, while retaining functional expertise.

People leadership:

  • You will grow and support a world-class team of developers who are highly autonomous and productive. You will be responsible for setting them up for success while providing guidance along the way.

  • You will expand and reorganize the team and its processes as context changes. You will ensure that tooling and workflows are appropriate. You will be critical of the status quo.

  • You will empower each individual to make decisions and move forward with as little dependencies as possible, delegating often and thoroughly.

  • You will ensure the team brainstorms and documents high-level ideas, goals, and best practices. You will encourage knowledge sharing.

Strategy and planning:

  • You will drive the vision for the Apple platform and technical strategy behind it.

  • You will plan work to strike a healthy balance between feature development, short-term and long-term improvements, so that we can confidently rely on our codebases for years to come.

  • You will be a coordinator and communicator between various technical and non-technical stakeholders, such as other Engineering teams, Product, and Support.

  • You will collaborate with other Engineering leaders and help shape Engineering at Doist as a whole. You will report to the CTO.

  • Internally, you'll help plan each work cycle by reviewing priorities, availability, and optimal matching of people to projects. You will periodically share updates so that everyone is aware of what's going on behind the scenes.

Functional expertise:

  • You will lead the team end-to-end, including on technical matters.

  • You will retain a strong technical intuition by staying partially hands-on where most impactful, such as R&D and supporting projects out of the critical path.

  • You will leverage your experience and technical intuition to ask questions and start discussions that drive the team's technical plans and overall strategy.

  • You understand that engineering management is a technical discipline that requires you to engage in technical decision-making. You realize that technical instincts, continuously honed, are vital for guiding that process.

About the team

The team consists of 8 developers.

About the code

You will be working primarily with Todoist and Twist for iOS, iPadOS, and watchOS — all native iOS applications written in Swift. You will also support the native macOS extensions of our Electron macOS apps, such as Widgets and Extensions.

We use a Continuous Delivery process to ship frequent and atomic iterations, strongly relying on automation to focus on the core development tasks.

About you

We expect you to be ambitious and driven in leading a technical team at scale.

You are ambitious and proficient in growing technical teams based on trust, autonomy, and transparency. You provide long-term vision and are able to distill it down into actionable steps, while inspiring your team to pursue it. You support and mentor your colleagues while investing in their personal growth. You realize that leadership comes with responsibility and restraint, and that your topmost priority is the well-being of your team.

You understand that engineering management is a technical discipline that requires you to engage in technical decision-making. You realize that technical instincts, continuously honed, are vital for guiding that process.

You want to thrive in a remote-first company that's multicultural and distributed worldwide, uncompromising in commitment to its values and mission, and focused on the long term. You can commit to this challenge for many years, and you don't hop around from job to job.

Challenges

Todoist for iOS has evolved organically since 2012, having gone through a few significant changes such as migrating from Objective-C to Swift, refactoring all the foundations to independent libraries, etc. These naturally introduce technical debt that we have to address consistently.

Twist for iOS started as a lab project from an independent team. The original codebase also supported a native macOS app, which influenced its design, which is very different from Todoist’s.

Having merged both teams, we invested in consolidating the design from both codebases. We want to continue that effort by leveraging the best of both approaches and designing new solutions with both codebases in mind.

We significantly improved the development processes and tools to support the current team size. Even though we are stable now, we should keep paying attention to that aspect, especially if we keep scaling the team.

Regarding the team structure, we heavily rely on delegation and individual ownership of specific areas — e.g., Configurations, Automation, Foundations, Architecture, Testing, UI, Integrations, etc. This approach has produced good results, but we need better coordination to take full advantage.
